A rear naked choke is one of the most effective attacks in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and the original title honored the idea that trials often come from out of sight and leave you vulnerable. Ivory, a survivor, takes self-defense lessons from Anjali, an injured BJJ competitor who encourages her to see the practice as a way to restore trust in her own body. We shot at the Renzo Gracie Fight Academy in Williamsburg. Jiu-jitsu spaces can feel sparse and sterile, and the challenge was to hold that reality while offering the audience an emotional softness with Ivory and the athletes around her. Ivory is quiet and reserved, sometimes hard to reach for the other characters and for the audience. There are also sequences where we needed to feel the violence and immediacy of the moment with her, where proximity doesn't mean intimacy so much as claustrophobia. Shot length did a lot of that work, close and wide, detached and long, controlling how near we're allowed to get before the characters can get in touch with themselves. The visual language is that tension between intimacy and detachment. Shot on a RED DSMC2 Helium with ZEISS Supreme Primes and a touch of Tiffen Black Satin, mostly to soften the overhead LED diodes we had to live with at the location. We filmed brewer Wade Yule on the brewhouse floor, surrounded by the big silver fermentation tanks, talking through the beer-battered tacos the two brands built together. My key grip found the right dolly position almost immediately and gave me one fluid boom after another for the interview coverage, which kept the interview from sitting static in a space that size. The food was shot separately on a studio tabletop. The New Jersey day had us wandering the greenhouse, playing the bright pastels of the collection against all that green. We worked closely with photographer Ian Boddy so he could shoot the editorial alongside us, which is always a challenge and something I genuinely enjoy. It means sharing lighting setups and mixing my HMIs with his flash so the two never fight each other on camera. Michael Parrella was on second camera, and I couldn't have done it without him.
